SNFCC presents the student ensemble of En Hordais & Organois Syros-based music school in a tribute concert to Syros-born great Greek popular music composer Markos Vamvakaris, in the ensemble’s debut performance outside of the island. Founded on Syros in 2017, the school provides folk music instrument lessons and promotes the island’s roots music culture. It was the vision of the school’s founder, composer Stavros Xarchakos – to provide training in the rebetiko music style pioneered by Markos Vamvakaris.
The concert on 15 July on the Great Lawn, Stavros Niarchos Park, features the soundtrack of Rebetiko film (lyrics: Nikos Gatsos, music: Stavros Xarchakos) before embarking on a musical journey back to the interwar period, the 1930s and ‘40s – the heyday of rebetiko music – including covers of some of Markos Vamvakaris’ iconic songs.
Ensemble members: Lavrentis Stratis (bouzouki, tzouras, baglamas), Yorgos Pachis (bouzouki, tzouras, baglamas), Theofilos Zervos (bouzouki, tzouras, baglamas), Alexandros Halavazis (guitar), Pantelis Roussos (bouzouki, tzouras, baglamas), Vangelis Stefanou (guitar), Petros Stefanou (bouzouki, tzouras, baglamas), Agni Roussou (bouzouki), Panayiotis Mantis (bouzouki, baglamas), Thanassis Stachtas (bouzouki), Elias Papamakarios (bouzouki), Michalis Bonis (bouzouki), Yorgos Loudaros (piano), and their music teachers: Aristos Vamvakoussis (bouzouki), Dimitris Marangos (accordeon), and Takis Frangous (double bass).
